Ethereum restarts leadership as a scaling pressure increases

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has entered what its new co-executive director calls a “moment of transition and opportunity” and has uncovered a comprehensive management change and refreshed its strategic vision through three coordinated blog posts released on Monday, April 28.
Hsiao-wei Wang and Tomasz K. Stańczak, who co-guided EF for nearly a month, announced that “the honeymoon is over – it’s time to move,” indicating the end of an unusually quiet handheld phase and the beginning of an internal government based on a Swiss-based foundation to redefine the priorities and external priorities of the internal government based on the Swiss-based foundation.
The first experiment led by Ethereum and co-led was formed as a deliberate antidote to single point of vulnerability. “EF is not two carriages pulled in different directions,” Wang and Stankak wrote. “Our relationships are built on mutual respect, trust and shared values. We work closely together to challenge each other constructively and ultimately move forward as a unified team with common goals.”
A new era of the Ethereum Foundation
Over the next 12 months, these goals converge in three technical aspects: extending the mainnet at Layer 1, extending the data availability “Blobs”, and smoothing the user experience in Layer 2 and application layers. Stankak promised “speed of execution, accountability, clear goals, goals and metrics”, adding that Ethereum Neris will maintain “a global, neutral network that is a protocol of trust.”
Structural transformation is beyond management. Another article from the EF Board describes the board as “a security council that protects the heart and soul of EF”, responsible for visual level oversight and regulatory compliance in Switzerland. Vitalik Buterin retained a board seat and “continue to provide technical and knowledge guidance” while EF Chairman Aya Miyaguchi, Swiss lawyers Patrick Storchenegger and Wang will form their own four.
It is worth noting that Stańczak’s operational mission is sometimes: He agreed to “use his busy time on the board for the Ethereum ecosystem to leverage his tried-and-true strategic execution expertise and experience”. Wang’s role on the board and management is designed to “act as a bridge between the board, executives and management.”
In the third article titled “The Vision of the Ethereum Foundation,” Miyagi and Butling recast the housekeeper of the “Infinite Garden” with the aim of “staying resilient in a changing environment.” They describe the Foundation’s philosophy of “purposeful subtraction” and briefly outlined this: “We have no other people who can do today. We help others to do what we can only do today.”
Top priorities for 2025
The document promises to maximize meaningful Ethereum usage through internet local finance, decentralized social media or chain-chain AI coordination, while simultaneously maximizing “resilience of Ethereum technology and social infrastructure.” This resilience is defined by ecosystem autonomy, development team diversity, and uncompromising compliance with core values: resistance to censorship, open source, privacy and security.
King’s direct priority is to “strengthen EF operations to support ecosystem growth”, with particular emphasis on the application layer. She promises “improve the developer and user experience, clarify standards, enhance the ecosystem, and smoothly the journey from ideas to real-time applications.” Stańczak still involves Nethermind and Venture affiliations, which will focus on protocol-level scalability and layer 2 architectures.
Both directors stressed the importance of community visibility. Expect Devcon and other flagship gatherings to give “more presence and attention to apps and L2” and EF’s communication pace accelerated. “We are willing to have a tough conversation without delay,” Stankak noted.
All three posts come together on a command rate: 2025 must be a year when Ethereum proves that it can scale without damaging its spirit. The co-executive directors describe the coming months as “a journey through one of the most inspiring technological and social transformations we will go through”, while Miyaguchi and Buterin remind readers that “the greatest advantage of Ethereum is its unparalleled ecosystem.”
Whether the new dual leadership model can translate this advantage into mainnet throughput, tangible advances in BlobSpace efficiency and cross-rolling UX will be the first real test of EF’s “next chapter”. At present, the Foundation’s message is clear: the guards have changed, but “values remain the same.”
At press time, ETH traded at $1.814.
