Bitcoin Core Developers at the Center for Fierce Debate
According to a joint statement issued on June 6, 2025, 31 Bitcoin core developers have taken a clear position on how the network should handle non-monetary uses. They stress that their role is not to support or block data inscriptions and other non-financial activities.
The move has stirred a strong sense of the community as a whole, with debates involving freedom, fees and the purpose of Bitcoin.
Developers’ position on data policy
According to the report, the core team said they would not step in to prevent “harmless” data from entering the blockchain. They point out that Bitcoin’s main advantage is its resistance to censorship. Therefore, any user-driven software choice must stand.

They simply say: It depends on the node operator to choose what they accept. This approach is designed to keep the network free, even if it means it carries extra data.
Community voice division
After the statement, the reaction poured in. JAN3 CEO Samson Mow called the developer’s tone hollow and said recent changes have “opened the floodgates” for spam. He believes removing technical barriers will encourage unwanted data.
Bitcoin Core developers have been gradually changing the network to enable spam and now seem to focus on removing barriers to spammers. Just say “this is what’s happening now, it’s so bad.”
This statement itself is inappropriate. It feels like the NYA of the core developers.

On the other hand, Casa’s Jameson Lopp praised the clear interpretation of the relay rules. LOPP notes that the unified voice of developers has helped reduce past confusion about policies.
Recent upgrade spark concerns
On May 8, 2025, core developers deleted the long-term limit on the size of transaction data. This adjustment allows anyone to include a lot of information in the transaction. Critics fear that this will drive blockchain to inflate and increase fees.
Prognosing what miners will include and deliver that information is the key to keeping Bitcoin running smoothly, proponents say. They claim that this neutral relay policy can also help miners and users, even if not everyone buys it.
Future fork and layer solutions
Looking ahead, some believe that the new fork can split a “pure currency” chain to block data inscriptions. Others foresee the heavy lifting of art, messaging and other uses for Layer 2 networks or side chains.
Either way, most people agree that wallet and node software will soon offer options: one for cleaning, financial transactions only, while the other for those who don’t mind extra data. This selection will let the user vote through their settings, rather than relying on the developer to make calls.
