Bitcoin is no longer just something to hold, but it can also be inhabited. That was the core message conveyed by Miles Suter, the head of Bitcoin product at Block Inc. in a keynote speech at today’s Bitcoin 2025 conference. Standing at the intersection of innovation and ideology, Suter proposed a vision that Bitcoin is not only a store of value, but also the original currency of the Internet.
“Bitcoin is at a crossroads – on the one hand it has never been stronger: trillions of dollars in market capitalization, millions of holders, and even talk about nation-state adoption,” Sutter said. “We use Bitcoin to hold, hedge, opt out, but we rarely use it to live. At Block Inc., we think that has to change.”
Suter officially announced that Block will use Square Pos to launch merchants’ Bitcoin payment capabilities, allowing them to accept Bitcoin directly in the store. The move is part of a wider planning block that uses the entire Bitcoin for business stacks – covering, managing, reporting, reporting, accounting, conversion, loans and taxes.
“That’s what makes Bitcoin the everyday currency for everyone,” he stressed. “We believe that hard-working entrepreneurs should get the full power of Bitcoin.”
To demonstrate the vision in action, Block helped pay a day for the Guinness World Records attempt to stream live in the conference. Goal: Prove that Lightning Payment is not only functional, but also scalable, fast and authentic.
Block’s promise is not new. In 2020, the company placed Bitcoin on its balance sheet. In 2021, it co-founded the Bitcoin Clean Energy Program to fight the “boiling ocean” narrative. In 2022, cash apps become one of Lightning’s first major platforms. In 2023, it initiated chain payments with Square. In 2024, it helped defeat Craig Wright in court, “Stand up for Satoshi.”
“These are not only headlines, but a pattern,” Sutt said. “We make it easier to access and safer. Now, we focus on making it available every day.”
The cash app already accounts for nearly 10% of the chain barrier space among the highest-ranked Bitcoin off-road coins in the United States. In 2024, Lightning will be used 7 times. “Block runs one of the top lightning nodes around the world. That’s wildness – it’s working,” he said.
Block now takes 10% of all profits from Bitcoin and adds it to the balance sheet, with more than 1,700 merchants converting a portion of their sales into Bitcoin every day.
“If Bitcoin is just digital gold, we failed the task,” Sutter said. “Bitcoin payments verified Bitcoin. They make it a reality. Bitcoin is money.”
