North Korea on the ground in helping Russia target cyber operations

As cybersecurity researchers warn that North Korea’s North Korean security campaign is a recent cybersecurity campaign against Ukrainian government entities by state lawmakers in North Korea, North Korea’s participation in Ukrainian wars is beyond the scope of sending soldiers, ammunition and missiles to Russia.

“Prove that Point’s goal of TA406 is to better understand the appetite of continuing to fight Russian invasions and assessing the mid-term prospects of conflict,” researchers at cybersecurity firm Proofpoint wrote in a report this week.

Also known in the security industry as Konni, Opal Sleet and Osmium, TA406 has been active since at least 2014, ironically, historically targeting Russia as well as South Korea. For example, in January 2022, Konni used a disguised email to send Russian diplomats as a New Year greeting.
