Parenting is progress, not perfection

Parenting is not rocket science. This is much more difficult. With all the respect that rocket scientists deserve, a failed launch is far less meaningful than a failed parenting strategy.

Progress is a more achievable goal, and taking steps that lead to meaningful change is what you really hope for. Parenting is the most challenging and meaningful responsibility of our lives. Imagine bringing the entire human race into this world, which is a literal meaning among you, rather than being awe of such profound blessings. Your family is your greatest flexibility.

Despite this, perfection is a trap. If you are expecting the perfect day, the perfect mood, the perfect meal or the perfect discipline, you will be disappointed. Children don’t need perfect parents. They need parents who are now committed to growing up with them.

In the struggles and triumphs of everyday life, the hour is most important: after a difficult day, an encouraging word that embraces consistency even after a tantrum, can be listened to when it’s easier to scold. Progress means that today is a little better than yesterday and gives yourself (and your child) grace failure.

Parenting is not about reaching the ultimate destination of mastery, it is about the journey. Every little intentional move forward is a victory worth celebrating.
