Sales data: Trump administration withdraws data brokerage oversight recommendations

With the bigger changes in the CFPB under the Trump administration, evacuation is emerging. The agency has withdrawn numerous guidance documents issued since 2011 and has cancelled other consumer protection recommendations.
However, the CFPB leaves the possibility of future action opening up, noting: “When and whether it is determined that it is necessary to issue a rule to implement relevant definitions and provisions of the FCRA, it will propose a new rule and seek public comment in it.”
Privacy involves upgrades
Without these protections, data brokers can continue to collect and sell sensitive personal information from Americans with minimal supervision. These data often include social security numbers, financial records, location history and purchase patterns, leaving consumers vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.
